Stevenage 1-0 Burton Albion

Ian Sharps
Sharps has yet to score for Burton this season

Ian Sharps' late own goal saw Stevenage earn a narrow victory against high-flying Burton Albion.

Stevenage substitute Tom Pett came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time when his attempted cross bounced back off the crossbar.

Lucas Akins and Phil Edwards went close for Burton as they pressed for a goal.

However, Charlie Adams's 84th-minute effort took a wicked deflection off Brewers captain Sharps, leaving keeper Jon McLaughlin with no chance.

Stevenage manager Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I would say it was a very structured, disciplined and hard-working victory. We knew what they would offer, we knew the type of football they would play.

"When you're playing a tactical game against a side that is defensively organised well, you have to break them down slowly but surely.

"Bide your time, show patience, show intelligence, keep your discipline and I think we did all those things.

"Something's emerging and the boys are starting to build in confidence."

Burton Albion boss Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby:

"It wasn't a pretty game. I certainly don't think as a spectator I'd be wanting to pay and watch that match.

"I'll be honest, after about 20 minutes you looked at the game and thought this will probably be a 0-0 if you had to put your money on it.

"They certainly didn't cause us any problems and so to come undone with the goal we conceded and the way it went in was very unfortunate.

"We've spoken to the strikers. We've not done enough in the attacking third, I felt our front four weren't dangerous."
