Champions Atletico Madrid moved to within two points of leaders Barcelona and Sevilla by grinding out a victory over Getafe.
Mario Mandzukic scored the only goal from close range after Arda Turan's mis-hit shot landed in his path five minutes before the break.
Getafe had defender Alexis sent off for swinging an arm in Mandzukic's face 10 minutes into the second half and Juan Rodriguez's stamp on the striker moments later went unnoticed by the referee.
Moments before kick-off at Getafe, Sevilla had gone level on points with Barcelona at the top after coming from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1 with two late goals.
Luciano Vietto gave the Yellow Submarine a 79th-minute lead but Denis Suarez equalised nine minutes later and Carlos Bacca scored an injury-time winner from the penalty spot.
