Match ends, Cheltenham Town 0, York City 1.
Diego De Girolamo scored his third goal in four matches as York beat Cheltenham to seal their second win of the season.
The Italian striker, on loan from Sheffield United, steered home Michael Coulson's pass to give the visitors a deserved half-time lead.
The Minstermen then had to withstand a second-half rally from Cheltenham.
Away goalkeeper Aleksander Cisak did superbly to twice deny Byron Harrison, while Terry Gornell sent a free header wide for the hosts.
De Girolamo had earlier smashed a shot against the post and clipped another smart effort inches wide as York dominated the first period.
Deon Burton, making his York debut on loan from Scunthorpe, volleyed over from close-range, while the dangerous Coulson fired just wide.
The Robins livened up considerably after the break - and Gornell should have equalised when he directed a free header from Raffaele De Vita's right-wing cross wastefully off target.
Cisak then parried an excellent shot on the turn from Harrison before keeping out an instinctive strike from the Robins substitute three minutes from time.
Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I'd like to apologise for the first half performance. I'd like to thank the supporters for even applauding at the end.
"We got bullied, outplayed, they could have had a few goals. We're not kidding ourselves, our first half performance was woeful.
"I don't pick people out but Terry (Gornell) should be scoring at least one of a couple of good chances that came his way.
"It's not about tactics or formations, it's about a bit of desire, and that's probably the only time I've questioned their desire this season."
York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:
"It's important as a new manager to get off the mark. We were so close at Morecambe the other Tuesday so to see this one out is very pleasing.
"It was certainly a game of two halves, similar to most games I've been involved in at York.
"We dominated the first half and could have should have been out of sight.
"We had that little bit of luck today we've not had in previous games."
