Louis Briscoe scored twice as Torquay pulled off a surprise win at leaders Barnet to end a run of four defeats.
Briscoe put the Gulls ahead after good work by Ryan Bowman and Luke Young.
United went 2-0 up with an own goal by Barnet keeper Graham Stack from Young's free-kick, but substitute Luisma Villa Lopez replied at a long throw.
Briscoe restored the two-goal lead 30 seconds later with a low 30-yard shot before Charlie MacDonald set up Bernard Mensah for Barnet's second.
But Torquay held on to move to within two points of the play-off places and inflict Barnet's second home defeat in four days following their FA Cup exit on Saturday.
