Two Romanian players receive 16-match bans

Red card
Viitorul Constanța finished 12th in Romania's top flight last season

Two Romanian players have been banned for 16 matches, the Romanian Football Federation has announced.

Viitorul Constanta's Alin Seroni has been punished for a challenge that left Universitatea Craiova's Nicusor Bancu with a fractured ankle.

Midfielder Gabriel Muresan, who plays for Targu Mures, will also have to sit out 16 matches after a violent tackle.

Targu Mures responded angrily to the ban, saying other players had committed bad fouls but escaped serious bans.

Seroni, 28, committed the challenge during a domestic cup match on 29 October.

Bancu suffered an ankle fracture in the first period of extra-time with referee Florin Miron immediately showing Seroni a second yellow card.

Universitatea won the tie 2-1.

Muresan, 32, was punished for a challenge he committed during his team's 1-0 league win over champions Steaua Bucharest on 26 October.
