Welling won back-to-back games for the first time this season as Charlie Penny's second-half goal was enough to see off Braintree.
Zach Fagan and Jake Gallagher went close for the visitors, before keeper Nick Hamann denied Aristide Bassele.
Welling deservedly went ahead when Penny found the top right corner just after the hour with a slick finish.
Sean Marks and Dan Sparkes had chances to draw the hosts level, but Welling keeper Benjamin Buchel thwarted both.
Welling have moved to within just two points of Braintree as a result of their victory, moving up to 18th place, with the Iron dropping three places to 16th.
