Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm will be out of action for three months after suffering a fractured ankle in training on Tuesday, his club have revealed.

The club said it was a "big blow" to lose the 31-year-old midfielder, who retired from international football after Germany's World Cup win in July.

The Bundesliga leaders are undefeated this season and face Hoffenheim on Saturday.

They then travel to meet Manchester City in the Champions League next week.

The club tweeted: "Big blow for Philipp Lahm: The captain has suffered a fractured ankle. He needs an operation and will be out for around three months!"

The player had to be stretchered off on a golf cart following the training accident, which the club said did not involve another player.
