  • Dundee first team to reach Scottish Cup fifth round
  • David Clarkson scores for eighth game in a row
  • Thomas Konrad scores for both teams

David Clarkson scored for the eighth match in a row as Dundee snatched a place in the Scottish Cup fifth round in dramatic fashion at Dens Park.

The Dees' German defender Thomas Konrad rose to head home Gary Harkins's inviting free-kick after four minutes.

But he then scored an own goal when the ball bounced off his thigh past goalkeeper Scott Bain from close range.

Bain saved an Adam Rooney header and a Jonny Hayes free-kick before Clarkson's stunning injury-time winner.

It was a sickening end for Aberdeen, whose former manager Sir Alex Ferguson was watching from the stand.

The visitors began briskly and Niall McGinn came close to converting Rooney's shot across the face of the goal within 30 seconds of kick-off.

But Dundee soon settled and produced the opener, the result of a well-rehearsed set-piece routine.

Awarded a free-kick 35 yards out, Harkins threw the ball to Kevin Thomson, who immediately placed the ball down for his team-mate to sweep a high ball into the area. Konrad headed powerfully past Scott Brown, who should probably have kept it out.

Yet it was the Dons who looked the more composed, their passing the crisper and Dundee struggled to cope with their movement when McGinn, David Goodwillie and Rooney combined.

Aberdeen did not deserve to be behind, and 13 minutes later their 4,000 fans were celebrating the equaliser.

Dons defender Mark Reynolds appeared to barge through the back of Clarkson on the halfway line, but Hayes wasted no time picking up possession and slipping the ball to McGinn. His cross from the left was deflected into his own goal from two yards out by Konrad for his second goal of the day.

Dundee continued to afford the Aberdeen forwards space and it took a superb diving save by Bain to keep out Rooney's angled header from a Goodwillie cross. A mis-hit by McGinn then let the Dark Blues off the hook.

Paul Hartley's men had their own chances to retake the lead. Boyle's delivery across the 18-yard line was missed by Aberdeen defender Shay Logan, but Greg Stewart failed to test the keeper with his wayward effort.

And Clarkson was close to poking home a loose ball after Brown saved a fierce shot by Boyle.

The pattern continued after the break with Aberdeen the more enterprising but Dundee always looking capable of snatching a second goal.

A last-ditch clearance by Gary Irvine denied Goodwillie and only a marginally over-eager touch by Rooney foiled a chance for the same player in a neat one-two.

Clarkson and Harkins were unable to retain possession for long enough for their hesitant team-mates to support attacks. But Ryan Jack was more ambitious for the Reds and when he advanced and shot, the ball was spilled by Bain for a corner.

Hayes delivered to the back post for the towering Ash Taylor to head back into the centre for McGinn but he headed straight at the Dees goalie.

The lively Hayes then weaved his way past three players in the box and set up Rooney, who smashed a shot into the side-netting from eight yards, and Goodwillie hit the same spot moments later but from further out.

In the 90th minute Hayes cracked a free-kick round the Dundee wall but Bain made another terrific save to set up the dramatic finale.

That was provided by Clarkson as he pounced on a James McPake knock-on to settle the tie and stun Aberdeen.

There was still time for McGinn to smash a shot off the underside of the crossbar and referee Steven McLean waved away Aberdeen's claims the ball had bounced over the line.
