Rangers 1-0 Cowdenbeath

By Alasdair LamontBBC Scotland at Ibrox

Rangers recorded their first league win in three games but the manner of victory over second-bottom Cowdenbeath was far from convincing.

If Ally McCoist was looking for a performance to help erase memories of Wednesday's defeat by Alloa, he would have been largely disappointed.

His side turned in an insipid display, though Dean Shiels was an exception and fittingly scored the only goal.

Cowdenbeath were compact and difficult to break down but Rangers lacked flair.

The three points aside, there was little on show to appease the Ibrox fans dissatisfied by the team's direction.

And critics of McCoist will not have been appeased, with his team rarely raising the tempo or showing the quality the players should be capable of.

Rangers striker Kris Boyd
Kris Boyd and Rangers laboured to victory over Cowdenbeath

Booed off at half-time following an opening period in which a shot against a post by Shiels was the only moment of genuine threat, Rangers improved marginally in the second period.

The goal that saved them from an even harsher appraisal was a rare moment of quality.

Kenny Miller headed the ball into the path of Shiels from close to the corner flag and the Northern Irishman placed a low shot past Robbie Thomson from a tight angle.

Cowdenbeath did not collapse, though did they show any real sign of being able to equalise, either.

Nicky Clark, who must wonder what he has to do to earn a starting place for Rangers, came off the bench and almost doubled the lead in added time, but his deflected shot was saved superbly by Thomson.

There were no boos at full-time, but a sense of discontent persists at Ibrox.
