Falkirk 0-1 Raith Rovers

By Andrew SouthwickBBC Scotland

Raith Rovers made Falkirk pay for a string of missed chances as Rory Conroy's late goal kept alive their play-off chances.

Falkirk hit a post and had a shot cleared off the line as they tried to take advantage of Queen of the South's slip earlier in the day.

However, after Conroy had missed from close range a minute earlier he lashed in at the back post.

It moves the Kirkcaldy side to within eight points of fourth place.

The result halts a run of four league wins in a row for the Bairns just as their promotion push was gathering momentum, and they will feel they should have taken something from the game.

Calum Elliot was sent tumbling in the box as Raith Rovers started the more aggressive of the two teams, however referee Andrew Dallas deemed it a fair challenge.

It was an early flurry of chances for the visitors but the game soon quietened down until Blair Alston flashed a shot at goal from a close angle in 23 minutes.

A minute later and goalkeeper David McGurn had to bail out defender Rory McKeown when he misjudged a through ball, saving Rory Loy's shot before Alston dragged the rebound wide.

Loy was finding pockets of space in between the Raith defence and midfield, and he was able to glide down the right wing and drift inside before hitting a shot just past.

Falkirk, though, had the post to thank for keeping them level right on the stroke of half-time.

Barrie McKay took the ball down well and was able to lay it off to Ross Callachan whose shot skimmed off the foot of Peter Grant and onto the woodwork.

Peter Houston's men were having the majority of possession but could not make the goalkeeper work, epitomised by Alston's clever one-two resulting in a wild shot over the bar.

The visitors had half chances of their own and Luke Leahy almost directed the ball into his own net from Jason Thomson's drilled cross.

Another mistake at the back, this time when David McCracken failed to control the long ball, gifted Elliot the chance but he could not keep his volley on target.

Both teams were determined to find a winner, and Conroy and Alston both went close at either end within a minute of each other.

It was Conroy, though, who made no mistake when presented with another chance.

McKay looked set to have a shot himself but instead elected to knock the ball wide to McKeown.

His low ball was inexplicably allowed to travel through the Falkirk defence all the way to the back post where the grateful Conroy was waiting to tap it in.

Falkirk could not have gone any closer to an equaliser as they pressed late on.

Loy's cross was knocked towards goal by David Smith and Thomson as they went to meet it, and the ball almost evaded McGurn who was felled by his own defender, but he did enough to clear off the goal line.
