Promotion-chasing Chesterfield survived several close shaves to earn a point from a 0-0 draw at the Ricoh Arena.

Coventry thought they had a penalty on 38 minutes when striker Frank Nouble powered forward past Tendayi Darikwa, who bought the on-loan midfielder down.

Referee Darren Handley pointed to the spot but then changed his mind to award a free-kick on the edge of the area.

The Sky Blues then went even closer in the final minute when on-loan striker Gary Madine hit the woodwork.

Home forward Simeon Jackson had also gone close after the break, racing clear of his marker to unleash a shot which dipped just over the bar.

Aaron Martin could then have won it with eight minutes to go when he let fly from 30 yards only for visiting goalkeeper Tommy Lee to palm the ball round the post.

Coventry were without suspended midfielders Adam Barton and James Maddison, who were both sent off for second bookable offences in the 2-0 Boxing Day defeat by Doncaster Rovers.

Coventry manager Steven Pressley told BBC Coventry And Warwickshire:

"It was a winning performance, there's no doubt about that. We were excellent, in control.

"The encouraging thing for me is we're getting much more control of games, and that was again very evident.

"We dominated for long periods and the only thing that was missing was the goals. It wasn't for the want of trying or chances created. The ball just wouldn't go in the net."

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It's probably as poor as we've played in a long time.

"It's great to come away with a point because we were second best all over the pitch.

"We got all our decisions wrong today and things just didn't go right for us. We huffed and puffed but it's good top take a point away from home today."
