Oxford United have told forward Brian Howard his time at the club is over.
Signed in September, his initial deal was due to expire next month but the 31-year-old has been limited to just eight games for the U's.
Manager Michael Appleton says it is only fair to allow Howard time to try and find a new club and to allow him to bring through younger talent.
"It's unfortunate for Brian but that is the business we are in," Appleton told BBC Radio Oxford.
And Appleton says he has made the right decision for the football club by allowing former Swindon, Sheffield United, Reading, Portsmouth and Birmingham man to leave.
"I do look people in the eye and tell them face to face," he added.
"There is no hidden agenda behind it all. I've got to make decisions for the best of the football club and I genuinely believe we have two or three young players who don't need holding back or people getting in their way and stopping them from developing."
