Rangers 3-1 Dumbarton

By Alasdair LamontBBC Scotland

Rangers recorded their first win under new manager Kenny McDowall with a narrow victory over Dumbarton.

The home side were ultimately deserving of the three points but started in shaky fashion, falling behind to Andy Graham's goal.

They turned things round before the break through Jon Daly and Lee Wallace.

The third goal from Dean Shiels did not materialise until the dying seconds after Dumbarton had given everything in search of an equaliser.

But they were unable to add to Rangers' recent on-field misery and were punished on the breakaway by that Shiels counter.

With a better crowd at Ibrox, probably at least in part a reflection of the past week's share purchases by Dave King and another group of Rangers-supporting businessmen, the players were able to reward them with a victory.

But a customary edginess typified Rangers' performance early in the game and Dumbarton were worthy of the lead when Graham prodded home.

The defender got on the end of a Colin Nish knockdown from Scott Agnew's corner to poke into the net.

Nish perhaps should have done better than head straight at Steve Simonsen moments later and Dumbarton were punished almost immediately as Stevie Smith's wonderful cross took a deflection on to Daly's chest, which diverted the ball past Danny Rogers and into the net.

Rangers began to ease into the game and were good value for their second goal, which was a well-taken drive from the edge of the box by Wallace.

But as the game wore on and Rangers failed to find a third goal, Dumbarton's belief that they could snatch an equaliser grew.

They heaped pressure on Simonsen's goal, albeit without really forcing a save from the keeper.

And as they mounted one last push, they were caught on the break by Shiels, who sealed the points.
