Oldham ended their mid-winter slump with victory at Fleetwood, whose poor home form continued.
The Latics dominated possession in a first-half stalemate, but Fleetwood created the better openings with Josh Morris's shot cleared off the line.
But the home side could not keep up the pressure after the break and Carl Winchester's curling shot left Cod Army keeper Chris Maxwell with no chance.
Mike Jones' well-placed free-kick from the edge of the box sealed the win.
Oldham manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"The win was really important for us. We played very well in our last two games previous to this game and only came out with one point.
"People started questioning us, have we got the quality to be up there and it was important today that we came and give a good show of ourselves and to get a clean sheet and to score two fantastic goals and completely dominate the second half.
"I was very proud of my club."
