Wigan Athletic 1-1 Blackburn Rovers

James McLean's second-half goal earned Wigan a draw against Blackburn but they remain in the Championship drop zone.

Rovers took the lead when Tom Cairney teed up Corry Evans and he powered in a shot from the edge of the area.

McClean, who might have been sent off for a challenge on Markus Olsson, equalised when he headed in a Shaun Maloney free-kick.

Rovers had chances to win it, but Jordan Rhodes and Jason Lowe both had efforts cleared off the line.

Malky Mackay: Wigan boss on Blackburn draw

Rhodes had a volley nodded away by Leon Barnett, while Lowe's late header was cleared by Maloney.

Earlier on, following Evans's opener, Rhodes could have extended his side's lead when he was put through on goal only to have his effort saved by Scott Carson.

The visiting side's players were left incensed by a McClean challenge on Olsson just before the break but referee Mike Jones chose to give the Wigan winger a yellow card.

The decision proved pivotal, with McClean heading in the equaliser.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay on forward Shaun Maloney: "I'm delighted his move to Leicester broke down. It's not an easy skill to do what he's done, believe me.

"Shaun's a good boy, someone I've only known for six or seven weeks but I've had plenty of chats over his future.

"I knew if I needed to call on him I could, and it shows the measure of him that he's playing like that two days after it looked like he would become a Leicester player."

Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer on in-demand striker Rudy Gestede: "There's a Premier League club in discussions with the club but the club quite rightly doesn't want to sell him on the cheap.

"If nothing is concluded over the weekend we'll have him back on Monday, and we'll continue to have him available for the rest of our games and scoring more goals.

"Talks have taken place over the last 24 hours and we decided to focus on this game with the players we knew would be available."
