Cup tie abandoned after player hits head against wall

Larne player Scott Irvine was taken to hospital after colliding with a wall

Saturday's Irish Cup game between Larne and Carrick Rangers was abandoned when a player sustained a head injury.

Larne's Scott Irvine received lengthy medical attention after crashing into a perimeter wall at Inver Park.

Irvine was reported to be conscious and talking before being taken by ambulance to hospital for what was described as a precautionary scan.

The injury happened in the 28th minute when Irvine banged his head after a challenge with a Carrick player.

Initially, there was extreme concern from players and officials who were close to the incident.

The referee decided to call the game off and a new date for the fifth round match will be arranged.
