Dundee 1-0 Kilmarnock

By Roddie McVakeBBC Scotland

Greg Stewart scored his 13th goal of the season to send his side above Kilmarnock into seventh spot in the Premiership.

The striker, who signed a contract until 2017 last week, beat Craig Samson from the penalty spot after Manuel Pascali brought down Jim McAlister.

Gary Harkins crashed an effort off the bar after the break and McAlister missed a great chance to make it 2-0.

Dundee are now seventh in the Premiership table on 29 points.

The result is yet another blow for Killie, who have now lost three league games on the spin.

Dundee went into the match on the back of a 3-3 draw with Aberdeen and a 4-1 win at Motherwell.

The first real chance fell their way but with Stewart preparing to pull the trigger in the box, Killie defender Ross Barbour's perfectly-timed tackle nicked the ball away.

Dee keeper Scott Bain made a fine save from Lee Ashcroft's close-range header before the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot.

Pascali tripped McAlister in the box and Stewart calmly sent Samson the wrong way.

Alexei Eremenko went close to levelling when he drilled in an effort from 15 yards after his great footwork beat two players on the edge of the area gave him a chance to shoot, but keeper Bain stuck out a hand to beat the ball away to safety.

Iain Davidson nearly doubled Dundee's lead but after cutting in from the left his low curling effort went wide of Samson's left post.

Dundee started the second half in similar fashion with Paul McGowan and Luka Tankulic linking well to set up Harkins, whose left-foot drive crashed off the bar, hit keeper Samson and then bounced over.

McAlister should have made it 2-0 but after Tankulic did well to pick him out in plenty of space in the box, he scooped the ball into the air from eight yards to make it easy for Samson to collect.

Home keeper Bain intercepted a cross into his area with Pascali waiting to pounce as the visitors searched for an equaliser late on.

Killie continued to press but were unable to find a goal as Paul Hartley's Dundee made it eight points from their last four games.
