Match ends, York City 1, Burton Albion 1.
Substitute Adam McGurk scored a late equaliser for promotion-chasing Burton to deny York a first win in four games.
Debutant Emile Sinclair gave the Minstermen the lead from close range after being found by John McCombe.
Sinclair had many chances but was denied by goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin and shot narrowly over from distance.
Jacob Blyth missed two chances for the Brewers before McGurk curled in the equaliser, finding Bobby Olejnik's bottom corner from inside the area.
The point ensured that Burton remained in the automatic promotion places, one point behind leaders Wycombe, while York sit 19th, two points from relegation.
York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:
"We deserved to take all three points but just couldn't quite get the second goal. We worked hard and their keeper has been man of the match.
"I'm proud of the players. I've just said to them that's a benchmark.
"We've just played against a team second in the league and we've looked the best side over the 90 minutes."
Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told BBC Radio Derby:
"In the first half they were very dangerous on the counter and gave us problems, but in the second half I thought there was only one team in it.
"We played really well and had a few chances. But we were a little bit unlucky with the chances and it was a bit undeserved for us to go 1-0 behind.
"We deserved all three points, but I'm happy with the performance."
