The hosts went ahead when Paul McMullan - signed on loan from Celtic for the rest of the season on Friday - struck.
The Honest Men levelled before the break, Alan Forrest's strike finding the top corner.
McMullan and Ayr's Craig Beattie had late chances but Stenny remain two points above Ian McCall's side.
