Reading 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Nathaniel Chalobah
On-loan Nathaniel Chalobah scores his first goal for Reading following his move from Chelsea

Nathaniel Chalobah scored on his home debut as Reading secured their first home win since December.

The home team had early chances before Pavel Pogrebnyak headed in from eight yards after Stephen Kelly's cross.

Loanee Chalobah's half-volley made it 2-0, but Owls' Lewis Baker was denied moments before the break by a superb save from Adam Federici.

Jeremy Helan brought down Pogrebnyak on the hour, but Hal Robson-Kanu's feeble penalty was saved by Keiren Westwood.

The game was Wednesday's first since the announcement of a takeover by a Thai consortium this week.

Both sides started at a frenetic pace and Simon Cox had the first chance of the game for Reading as he tried to bend the ball round Westwood's right hand, but the keeper made a decent save.

Gareth McCleary then dragged the ball wide from 10 yards after Chalobah fizzed the ball into the penalty area.

But it was Pogrebnyak who made the breakthrough on the half-hour mark with a powerful header beyond the clutches of Westwood following a fantastic cross from Kelly.

England Under-21 international Chalobah, on loan from Chelsea, then despatched McCleary's cross for his first Reading goal.

The Owls were unlucky not to pull one back before half-time as Federici flung himself low to his right to tip Baker's shot around the post.

Reading were awarded a penalty after the break when substitute Helan crashed into the back of Pogrebnyak, but Robson-Kanu side-footed it straight into Westwood's hands.

The victory moved the Royals up to 16th in the Championship, with Wednesday dropping to 10th, nine points outside the play-off places.

Reading manager Steve Clarke:

"Slowly, step by step, you can see improvements here. We're all working together to get better and it's going well.

"We're starting to chip away at the goal difference as well and I'd like to see that get back into the positive."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray:

"From two crosses, they scored two goals. We were then chasing the game.

"I'm so disappointed with that because, away from home, we usually defend very well. But from those two balls into the box, we got punished. It's so disappointing the way the goals were conceded."
