AFC Telford United 0-1 Gateshead

Michael Rankine
Michael Rankine's tap-in was the striker's fourth goal of the season and his second in his last two games

Michael Rankine scored the only goal as Gateshead boosted their Conference play-off hopes by winning at Telford.

Rankine struck from close range to beat the bottom club after Carl Finnigan's effort had come back off the post.

Telford claimed Adam Farrell was bitten in a tangle with James Curtis, before Rankine almost doubled the Heed's advantage with a header off the bar.

Voting with their feet at the Bucks Head
The crowd of just 657 at the Bucks Head was the lowest for a league fixture since the club were reformed as AFC Telford in 2004. The Bucks' average home league crowd this season prior to the Gateshead game was 1,578.

Glenn Matthews had a penalty appeal turned down for the Bucks, who fell to their seventh defeat in eight games.

Telford's 25th loss in 39 Conference matches this season leaves them 15 points from safety with only seven games left to play.

Without a game this coming Saturday, Steve Kittrick's side could be relegated back to the Conference North as early as the trip to Dover on Saturday week (28 March).

AFC Telford United manager Steve Kittrick told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"Sometimes you don't get the rub of the green when you're down there but I was very pleased with the effort.

"Some teams have got more quality than us, but it's all about competing and we've done that.

"We've had 85 per cent chance of possession in the second half and, after the goal, Freddy Hall has not had a save to make."

"The team spirit is still good. All I ask from now until the end of the season is is that we put a shift in."
