Torquay United manager Chris Hargreaves has praised midfielder James McQuilkin for his dedication to the team.

The 26-year-old was released by Walsall in the summer, and has played seven times for Conference side Torquay since in November.

An injury to Angus MacDonald early in the weekend FA Trophy win at Hemel Hempstead saw him used at right-back.

After being a regular starter for Hereford between 2009 and 2013, James McQuilkin has started just six matches in the last two-and-a-half years.

"He can do that because he's a really good player. I thank him so much - he's still not being paid," said Hargreaves.

Having started life in the Football League with Hereford United, McQuilkin joined Walsall, but only managed two starts during his sole season with the Saddlers.

"I've got so much respect for him because that man's fighting for his career," Hargreaves told BBC Radio Devon.

"He's been absolutely magnificent, he's the type of character that I want around me at this club."
