Arjen Robben's second-half header gave Bayern Munich a lead they could not hold

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich remain eight points clear after earning a draw against Schalke with 10 men.

Bayern, beaten 4-1 at Wolfsburg on Friday as the league resumed after the winter break, had Jerome Boateng sent off after 16 minutes.

Boateng was dismissed for a professional foul on Sidney Sam, but Manuel Neuer saved Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's resulting penalty.

Arjen Robben headed Bayern in front before Benedikt Howedes equalised.

The result secured a point for Schalke coach Roberto Di Matteo on his return to the Allianz Arena, where he won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012.

Second-placed Wolfsburg failed to close the gap, needing a late Kevin De Bruyne equaliser to get a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern had dropped just six points from their 17 Bundesliga matches before the winter break, but have failed to win either of their two league games since returning to action.

Boateng's red card made life more difficult for Pep Guardiola's side, who had a 100% home league record going into the match, but they continued to dominate possession.

They were denied a second-half opening goal in controversial circumstances when Robert Lewandowski squeezed a cross-shot in off Atsuto Uchida from the byline, only for the assistant referee to rule the ball had gone out of play first.

Bayern went ahead from the resulting corner as Robben nodded in from Xabi Alonso's delivery.

Schalke hit back five minutes later as Germany centre-back Howedes headed in a corner from Sam.
