Manager Shaun Derry says Notts County will not discuss a new deal with Roy Carroll until they know what division they will be playing in next season.
The 37-year-old joined the Magpies last summer and has been described by Derry as the best goalkeeper in League One, in which Notts currently sit 10th.
But the Northern Ireland international is out of contract in the summer.
"Not many clubs talk to players until you know where you are going to be," Derry told BBC Radio Nottingham.
"Hopefully we can get that magic figure of 51 or 52 points, and then we can start looking forwards.
"He's consistently been one of our top performers this season. Roy has to look at his career and where he wants to go and we have to look at that at the end of the season."
Carroll has featured in 31 of the 33 games Notts have played this season - including all league matches - and has also made a further four appearances at international level.
