Gillingham 2-0 Sheffield United

Jermaine McGlashan and Cody McDonald scored late goals as Gillingham secured victory over Sheffield United in front of new boss Justin Edinburgh.

McGlashan, on as a substitute, slotted in from Max Ehmer's long ball with four minutes left.

McDonald then smashed in McGlashan's lay-off to seal the points.

Sheffield United, without a win in their last five away league games, went closest when Che Adams' early effort was tipped over.

Edinburgh, who was announced as Gillingham's new boss before kick-off, watched the game from the stands.

Gillingham caretaker coach Steve Lovell told BBC Radio Kent:

"You always enjoy it when you win. All the boys, they don't give up. We've said that since we've come in. They needed that desire. There's no doubt they have the ability.

"There was certain things players weren't doing and you've got to be on top of it. They did in the second half."

"Cody McDonald has scored some great goals this year. He had a great volley against the bar and he then goes over and finishes. That's Cody all over."

Blades boss Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I thought we played all right first half, but couldn't really see them scoring - it had a 0-0 written all over it.

"After 86 minutes [goalkeeper] Mark Howard's had a rush of blood - it was a poor kick to start with, then he's come rushing out and it's cost us the game.

"We didn't create too much but they didn't either."
