Hamilton Academical 0-0 Kilmarnock

By Kenny CrawfordBBC Sport Scotland at New Douglas Park

Hamilton's failure to make the most of first-half dominance meant they had to settle for a point against Kilmarnock.

Jason Scotland, Danny Redmond and Jesus Garcia Tena went close for Accies in the opening 45 minutes.

Kilmarnock, under interim boss Gary Locke for the first time, improved after the break with Tope Obadeyi and Josh Magennis narrowly missing headers.

The hosts claimed for a penalty when Manuel Pascali challenged Redmond but referee Alan Muir saw no foul.

Alas, the one clear opportunity never materialised, and going by this season's record so far, there were never going to be many goals in what is the third contest between Hamilton and Kilmarnock in the current campaign - only one solitary strike had been mustered over their previous two head-to-heads.

Hamilton have now not won in the six games that player-boss Martin Canning has been in charge.

He also now has the added burden of dealing with the loss of top scorer Tony Andreu after the Frenchman's move to Norwich City.

The re-signing of striker Nigel Hasselbaink has excited Accies fans but the Dutchman watched this one from the stands.

Kilmarnock interim manager Gary Locke
Locke was in charge of Killie for the first time

Kilmarnock interim manager Locke will be content with a point after replacing Allan Johnston, who has given Locke his blessing to go for the job permanently.

Accies dominated the first half but fell short when it came to end product.

Redmond's scurrying and pestering was a constant nuisance to Killie and the little Liverpudlian played in Scotland early on, with the veteran striker turning his man well before blazing a shot over.

Midfielder Redmond nearly opened the scoring with a low left-footed curler to the far post after a threaded pass by Grant Gillespie, but visiting goalkeeper Craig Samson turned it away.

Further examples of Hamilton's superiority before the break were Darian MacKinnon's stinging shot and Garcia Tena's free-kick, which skimmed the roof of the net.

Whatever Locke said at half-time urged his troops to be more adventurous as Obadeyi shot Killie's first serious effort on target before he went close with a header from a corner.

Striker Magennis then met Chris Chantler's cross but watched his glanced header go inches past the post.

But most home fans will be at pains to say last-man Pascali's slip, which felled Redmond as he chased a long ball into the box, perhaps merited a spot-kick for Accies and a red card for the Italian.
