Institute are now four points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership after Coleraine ended a seven-game winless run by taking victory at Drumahoe.
The result extended Institute's run without a win to 15 games and the omens don't look good for them with the other teams near the bottom all improving.
Ian Parkhill put the Bannsiders ahead within 90 seconds with Matthew Snoddy adding the second before half-time.
Coleraine remain in seventh place four points behind sixth-placed Glenavon.
After Parkhill's early goal, he had a chance to extend Coleraine's lead but was denied by Saul Deeney.
Institute attempted to rally as Declan McKeever fired wide and Coleraine keeper Michael Doherty then saved a Dean Curry header.
However, Stute were in big trouble on 39 minutes as Snoddy doubled Coleraine's lead after Parkhill had out-foxed Paddy McLaughlin.
Robbie Hume tested Doherty with a shot before half-time and while Institute produced plenty of endeavour in the second period, Coleraine held on to their lead with a degree of comfort.
