Torquay boss Chris Hargreaves says the FA Trophy represents a chance for Aaron Downes "to do something in his career".
The Gulls host FC United of Manchester in the quarter-finals next week and the tournament is likely to be the club's best chance of silverware this season.
"He's up for the fight," said Hargreaves of the 29-year-old defender.
"He wants to do something in his career, he's never achieved a final or a promotion and he wants to do that here, and I want him to do that."
After Torquay on Saturday, Hargreaves's side are 14th in the Conference, seven points off the play-offs and have not won as league game since 9 December.
"We're all frustrated that we're not closer in the league after the start we had, but we still have the opportunity to get to a final so the game next week becomes vastly important for me and my players," Hargreaves told BBC Radio Devon.
"I've had a report sent through and we know the dangers and areas we might be able to exploit."
