New Manchester United defender Andy Kellett did not believe the Premier League giants genuinely wanted to sign him, according to his boss at Bolton.
The 21-year-old until the end of the season just before Monday's transfer deadline.
"He thought I was winding him up, he was on his way down to Plymouth," said Bolton manager Neil Lennon.
"We told him to ring his father and we'd tell him, and once that happened I think it started to sink in."
Kellett scored once in 15 games during a three-month loan spell with League Two side Plymouth Argyle this season, and has made only one start for the Trotters.
That came just a week ago, in the 4-2 Championship defeat by Rotherham United.
"Now he's got to knuckle down and learn. It's an opportunity for him regardless of what happens and I just hope he takes it in his stride," added Lennon, whose side received midfielder Saidy Janko on loan in return for Kellett.
