Oldham boss Lee Johnson knows that they were only able to sign striker Rhys Murphy from Dagenham because of his injury record.

A knee problem disrupted his second half of last season, and surgery meant he missed the first 12 weeks this term.

The 24-year-old on Monday after scoring 14 times in 41 League Two games for the Daggers.

"He's been blighted by injury but that is probably why we've got him so now we need to be patient," said Johnson.

"We need to make sure we get him right and don't rush him. It's a step up but he's got great movement and I believe if he's getting the service he'll score goals."

Murphy was not signed in time to be included in the Latics squad as they on Tuesday night.

Victory would have sent them up to fifth in League One, but defeat dropped them to 10th.

"It's gut-wrenching to come so close to moving into the play-offs," Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We have a squad good enough to beat anyone in this division, but five or six players weren't at their best."
