Scunthorpe United 3-1 Swindon Town

Paddy Madden
Madden is Scunthorpe's leading scorer with 14 goals this season

Struggling Scunthorpe United stunned League One title hopefuls Swindon Town with a brilliant second-half fightback.

Michael Smith put Town ahead with a superb 20-yard shot, while Andy Williams was denied by Luke Daniels' fine reaction save.

Neal Bishop's header hit the bar for United, but Paddy Madden equalised soon after with a drilled low finish.

Williams struck the bar from 18 yards, but Niall Canavan's header and Kevin van Veen's chip earned the win.

Swindon remain second, a point ahead of MK Dons and four points behind Bristol City as the top three all lost.

Scunthorpe moved up a place to 18th, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Scunthorpe United manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I thought we were absolutely brilliant in the second-half. The difference between the second and the first is we meant it. We meant what we were doing rather than apologising for going defending. It was too easy for them to drop the ball at the strikers feet and causing us problems so we ended up dropping deep.

"Players have gone out in the second-half and absolute credit to them, they have been magnificent. You can't get better than that because I think from what I have seen this season they are the best side in the division. They're up there on merit, they've got good players, they try and play the right way and I like the way they play. It's brave.

"We limited them to chances and we have taken the chances when they have come along in the second-half. Some of the goals we scored have been fantastic and I'm delighted we have scored from a set-play because it's not before time."

Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper told BBC Wiltshire:

"While it's only 1-0 and you're dominating and creating lots of chances, you know that there's going to be a sting in the tail.

"If you don't finish the game off when you're on top, you always leave the back door open. We shouldn't (only) be scoring one goal.

"Their chances came from set pieces. I can't recall them having lots of chances."
