Oldham Athletic 0-1 Colchester United

Sammie Szmodics' second-minute goal gave relegation-threatened Colchester a shock win at play-off hopefuls Oldham.

Szmodics drilled home from six yards after the hosts failed to clear David Fox's cross in a poor first half.

Mike Jones dragged his volley wide for Oldham after the break, with Gavin Massey and Matthew Briggs going close to doubling the U's advantage.

The Latics found the net in second-half injury time, but Liam Kelly's effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite a first victory in four, Colchester remain in the relegation zone but are now only one point from safety.

Lee Johnson's side slip to sixth, one point ahead of Chesterfield.

Oldham manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester:

"Of course it's not what you want, is it? I mean, I thought the second half, we gave it a go and I thought the subs gave us a bit of energy and a bit of impetus.

"But I think what killed us really was the first 20 minutes.

"We conceded a poor goal, we knew that set-pieces could be an issue - you just look at the mistakes.

"As a manager you try and guard against it and try and get them up for it and check everybody's legs and make sure they're alright and they should have been alright."
