Wigan striker Leon Clarke
Injured Wigan striker Leon Clarke is taken off the field in Friday night's game

Charlton eased their relegation concerns with victory over struggling Wigan, whose striker Leon Clarke was taken off wearing a neck brace.

The forward, who is on-loan from Wolves, appeared to fall awkwardly in the first half and received treatment on the pitch during an eight-minute halt to the game.

The Addicks were already 1-0 up through Frederic Bulot's left-foot drive.

Igor Vetokele headed in the second and Chris Eagles scored late on.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay stated after the match that Clarke had been taken to hospital to have his neck and shoulder injuries assessed, while midfielder William Kvist, who was also substituted, has a hamstring problem.

The win moves manager Guy Luzon's Charlton side up to 12th on 39 points - nine clear of the relegation zone. The Latics remain in 23rd spot, six points away from safety and having played a game more than their fellow strugglers.

The home side came into the match on the back of their first win in eight under Mackay, and looked threatening in the early stages with Addicks keeper Stephen Henderson denying striker Marc-Antoine Fortune at the near post.

However, it was Charlton who took the lead when Gabon midfielder Bulot beat keeper Ali Al-Habsi at his near post with a low shot.

The delay caused by Clarke's treatment did not appear to disturb the Addicks' focus. They doubled their advantage just before the break when Angolan Vetokele out-jumped three markers to head in from Bulot's cross.

And two minutes from time, victory was all but confirmed when former Bolton player Eagles added the finishing touch to a swift counter-attack.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay on his club's injury crisis:

"I don't think I've ever seen it at a football club as a player or manager, the amount of illness and injury in a short period of time.

"Starting with Grant Holt's cruciate, Emyr Huws' ankle, Juan Carlos contracting leukaemia and now Chris Herd, Kvist and Leon coming off like that.

"To lose that many key players, it's not something that's easy because you don't easily replace key players."

Charlton manager Guy Luzon:

"It was a game between teams who fight to stay in the league, a game of six points.

"We knew it would be tough because Wigan arrived with the good momentum from the win at Reading away. We knew it would not be easy.

"We came with confidence and we were magnificent in defence, organised well and our goalkeeper doesn't need to jump or touch the ball.

"We scored three goals, unfortunately our target was to keep the ball and move the ball, but the pitch was not so good."
