Barnsley 2-0 Crewe Alexandra

Managerless Barnsley claimed all three points with a comfortable victory over Crewe at Oakwell.

The best chance of a dour first half fell to the home side's Kane Hemmings, but the striker failed to connect with Leroy Lita's cross.

Lewin Nyatanga's header from Josh Scowen's free-kick gave the Tykes the lead midway through the second period.

An unfortunate own goal by debutant sub keeper Paul Rachubka sealed the win for Barnsley late on.

The Tykes' win moved them above Crewe on goal difference, with both teams five points above the relegation zone.

Crewe were hampered by the loss of young keeper Ben Garratt on 71 minutes.

That forced new signing Rachubka to come off the bench, barely 24 hours after signing for the Alex until the end of the season.

Barnsley caretaker manager Mark Burton told BBC Radio Sheffield:

Burton on Barnsley v Crewe

"It's quite different from last Saturday. It's a good feeling to win and the players have got that feeling in there.

"It was a difficult game. It was a tense atmosphere to start off with and the players were tense.

"You could see the players lift when the goal came. The goalkeeper and the back four were superb and the team took the game to Crewe."

Crewe manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke:

"This should be a wake-up call because I've been saying that we still have a lot of work to do. The easier part is getting out of the bottom four - the hard part is to keep winning games.

"I said to the players at half time that this game is crying out for someone to grab it by the scruff of the neck and show some real quality but it didn't happen.

"If we had scored the first goal, I thought we would have gone on and won the game but it proved the turning point for them.

"There was no one around Ben Garratt and it wasn't a challenge. He just felt his shin and couldn't put any weight on it so he had to come off. We'll get it checked out but we're hoping it is muscular more than anything."
