Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Shrewsbury Town

Danny Holmes
Holmes has scored two goals in 36 appearances for Tranmere this season

Tranmere recorded their first win in four games as they beat promotion-chasing Shrewsbury to move three points clear of the relegation zone.

Rory Donnelly gave Rovers the lead midway through the first half when he found the net from Marc Laird's pass.

The hosts doubled the lead just three minutes later when Danny Holmes fired in from just outside the box.

Connor Goldson pulled a goal back when he stabbed home Bobby Grant's corner but Rovers held on to win.

The game was delayed in the second half while Shrewsbury's Mickey Demetriou received lengthy treatment following a collision with Kayode Odejayi.

And in the 11th minute of injury time James Collins went close to making it 2-2 when he hit the crossbar.

Shrewsbury drop to second place in the table and are three points behind Burton Albion, who won at Dagenham.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"To give two goals away like that, is not like us - we have to move on very quickly and the league table suggests that we'll do that.

"I thought we tried to turn it into a bit of a cup tie. It was very stop-start and we tried to get momentum from that - but we gave it everything that we could. We have flung on players to try and get something - but it wasn't to be.

"Every time there was a bit of contact there was a free-kick but we just couldn't grab onto anything and force the equaliser."
