Stephanie Roche scores wonder goal

Fifa Puskas Award runner-up Stephanie Roche has signed for US Women's Soccer League club Houston Dash.

Roche, pipped for the Fifa world goal of the year award by Colombia's James Rodriguez last month, has agreed a two-year deal with the US club.

"I'm hoping I'll be able to go over and do well," Roche, 25, told RTE Sport.

Irish woman Roche said that she had had several offers from clubs in England and Europe before finally deciding on the move to the Houston club.

The Republic of Ireland international generated worldwide headlines for a volleyed goal for Irish women's club Peamount United in October 2013.

The remarkable strike helped her to earn a professional contract with French club ASPTT Albi last summer and she was then nominated for the Fifa world goal of the year award.

As well as her £650 monthly salary, Roche had her accommodation provided by Albi, a town of 51,000 inhabitants in south western France.

Roche opted to leave the French club shortly before last month's Fifa awards night.

Her spectacular turn and volley for Peamount against Wexford Youths Women on 13 October, 2013 was witnessed by just 95 fans but has since been seen by over six million YouTube viewers.

Roche represented the Republic of Ireland Under-17 team as a 14-year-old and since making her senior international debut in 2008, has gone on to accumulate 28 caps.
