Brentford 4-1 Huddersfield Town

Chris Long
Chris Long made the perfect start to his loan spell

Chris Long scored a brace on his first start as Brentford moved back into the Championship play-off places with a 4-1 win over mid-table Huddersfield.

Everton loanee Long smashed a shot past goalkeeper Alex Smithies to open the scoring then tapped in a rebound after Harry Bunn had levelled.

Alex Pritchard's curled shot made it three on 70 minutes and Jon Toral clinched the points in stoppage time.

Mark Warburton's Brentford climb to sixth, one point ahead of Ipswich.

It was a comfortable victory for a dominant Bees side against a Huddersfield outfit who seemed determined to play on the counter-attack from the outset.

After his powerful opening strike, Long almost quickly added a second, with only a point-blank stop from Smithies denying the defender after he had raced on to Toumani Diagouraga's through-ball.

Bunn's 22nd-minute equaliser gave Town hope, but the striker's goading of the Griffin Park fans saw him lucky to escape a card.

The Bees, who lost 1-0 at Birmingham last weekend, began to tire on a heavy pitch just before the break, but rediscovered their attacking flair in the second-half.

Jota left three defenders in his wake before seeing his 51st-minute drive parried by Smithies only as far as Long, who rifled the loose ball into the roof of the net.

On-loan Tottenham midfielder Pritchard then pounced to extend the lead and Toral volleyed in from the edge of the box late on.

It was another excellent home win for the Bees, who beat Bournemouth and Blackpool in their last two games at Griffin Park.

Brentford boss Mark Warburton: "It was similar to Saturday at Birmingham when we played against two banks of four, but this time we upped the tempo and intensity and maintained our width and got our rewards.

"It showed that if we have a setback we bounce back and more importantly, that we continue to learn. I was delighted for Chris Long.

"He fits our model of young, hungry players in the mould of Adam Forshaw, Jake Bidwell, Marcello Trotta and George Saville that have been well looked after at the club."

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell: "We started both halves very slowly and got punished both times. In the first half we could have been three down but for Alex Smithies, who made some brilliant saves.

"After we equalised we looked more confident on the ball, pushed forward and started to build. We got a foothold in the game but then conceded early in the second half and we were right up against it again."
