Ian Henderson and Joe Bunney scored two goals each as Rochdale kept Crewe in relegation danger.
Jamie Ness missed a one-on-one for the visitors, who went behind when Henderson converted from the spot after Bradden Inman fouled Joe Rafferty.
Henderson teed up the second for Bunney before slotting in another penalty, this time Jon Guthrie felling Bunney.
And Bunney added a fourth from Jamie Allen's pass to leave Crewe four points above the drop zone.
Dale's play-off hopes remain alive meanwhile, with the Spotland side five points off the top six.
