Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Blackburn

Jordan Rhodes
Blackburn won their first away Championship match for 11 matches

Blackburn Rovers won their first Championship away match for more than four months as they prepared for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final at Liverpool with victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Jordan Rhodes capitalised on defensive hesitancy to open the scoring from close range, his 13th goal this season.

Defender Adam Henley doubled the lead with a low shot.

Wednesday's Chris Maguire pulled a goal back but Rovers held on.

Blackburn still have an outside chance of making the play-offs but, 13 points off the top six, many will believe their season hinges on Sunday's trip to Anfield.

Sheffield Wednesday had won their last two matches - having won none of their previous seven - but are now two points behind Gary Bowyer's Blackburn.

Wednesday's new Thai owner Dejphon Chansiri was introduced to the Hillsborough crowd ahead of kick-off, 48 hours after announcing at his first news conference his intentions to lift the club into the Premier League by 2017.

But it was Rovers who went ahead as Chris Brown's header was allowed to roll between Wednesday's defence and goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, and Rhodes tapped in.

The lead was doubled as Chris Taylor slipped a clever pass into Henley's path inside the area and the marauding full-back stabbed a low shot beyond Westwood and into the far corner.

The visitors' lead was halved when Maguire's stinging close-range drive was blocked by goalkeeper Jason Steele and, in the ensuing scramble, Maguire fired the ball home when given a second chance.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray: "We seem to take two steps forward and three back.

"You can't gift a team a two-goal start in the Championship, you've got to get the first goal.

"We didn't play at the intensity that we did last Saturday and we couldn't handle the big boy (Chris Brown) up front. He was too physically strong for us."

Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer: "The bravery of our football on a difficult pitch was very pleasing.

"We encouraged the players to be brave and I think you saw that, particularly with our second goal, it was a great team goal.

"Then you saw different qualities in the second half. There was some wonderful desire to keep the ball out of the net."
