Braintree ended a four-game losing run with a narrow victory that dented Gateshead's play-off hopes.
Bernard Mensah headed over for the hosts early on, while Alex Rodman's shot for the Tynesiders was easily saved.
Lynden Gooch poked wide for Gateshead soon after the break before Mensah saw a well-struck drive strike the bar.
But Kenny Davis won it for Braintree from the penalty spot after Mensah was pulled down in the area.
The Iron are up to 16th in the Conference table while Gateshead have lost ground on those above them but stay ninth.
