Blackpool 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Lewis McGugan
Lewis McGugan has scored three goals in five games

Blackpool are 17 points adrift of Championship safety as their winless run stretched to eight games with a defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Watford loanee Lewis McGugan's third goal in five games was enough to earn Wednesday their third win in four league matches.

McGugan's curling free-kick from the left evaded everyone to find the net after the break.

Blackpool rarely threatened throughout.

It was a bad day for the bottom three, with Millwall and Wigan also losing, but Rotherham's victory at Huddersfield leaves Blackpool in even further danger.

The victory leaves Wednesday in 10th but, 13 points adrift of the top six, it would take a remarkable run of results to reignite their promotion hopes.

The visitors controlled a poor encounter, with McGugan shooting over the bar early on before striker Atdhe Nuhiu missed a free header at the back post.

Jamie O'Hara curled a free-kick over the bar in a rare Blackpool attack before McGugan fired the Owls into a deserved lead.

Wednesday dominated possession and had more shots on goal than Blackpool, who look certain to be playing League One football next season.

Blackpool manager Lee Clark: "It's getting a bigger miracle by the week that needs to happen for us to stay up.

"I'm 100% confident I'll be here next season, from the conversations I have had with the chairman.

"I want the players to stake a claim to be part of the overhaul that I'll be doing to try and get the club back to the Championship at the first attempt.

"There will be huge changes in playing personnel and how we structure everything."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray: "It's our 18th clean sheet of the season and we deserve credit for that.

"Obviously credit has to go to the goalkeeper and the back four but we defend from the front and you needed to do that on a pitch like this.

"It was very hard to play any kind of decent football on this pitch, it just wasn't conducive to knocking the ball around."
