Bristol City 3-0 Crewe Alexandra

Aaron Wilbraham
Aaron Wilbraham has now scored 17 goals for Bristol City since he joined in the summer

Bristol City secured an easy victory over Crewe to maintain their 11-point lead at the top of League One.

Keeper Paul Rachubka kept the visitors in the game early on, saving well from Aaron Wilbraham and Luke Freeman.

But Wilbraham drove home a low shot open the scoring before defender Aden Flint headed in his fifth goal in nine games to make it 2-0 at half-time.

As Crewe faltered, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas then waltzed through their defence to round Rachubka for City's third.

City now go into Sunday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Walsall on the back of an unbeaten seven-game run in which they have picked up 19 points out of a possible 21.

Crewe, who have conceded eight goals in two games following Saturday's 5-1 defeat at second-placed Preston, are now just two points clear of the relegation zone following Crawley's win at Port Vale.

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Bristol:

Cotterill on Bristol City v Crewe

"We were very good, considering what we've got coming up.

"The boys were really professional. Their attitude was first class.

"We had total dominance in the game. There was only a couple of things that worried me.

"We didn't really get out of second or third gear. I don't know what gear it was."

Crewe manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke:

"It has been a big learning curve for my players over the last two games. They will learn some lessons from it. Facing players of this quality should be an invaluable experience.

"They have struggled a bit but I was pleased that, even when they were finding it hard, they still worked as hard as they could and tried to be brave on the ball.

"I've told the players that this is the level they have to aspire to. This is where their ambition should be striving towards.

"But they are a resilient group, as they have already proved this season by bouncing back from heavy defeats.
