Tom Soares scored the only goal as League Two side Bury earned their sixth win in seven games at York City.
Soares turned in from eight yards out after being picked out by Joe Riley's cross from the right flank.
Emile Sinclair missed from seven yards for the Minstermen, while Nicky Adams blazed over for the visitors.
Jake Hyde came closest to equalising when he found the side netting late on, but Bury survived to move within four points of an automatic promotion spot.
York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:
"I feel like I'm saying the same things week in week out. We're lacking quality, that's why we're not scoring goals.
"They score with their only shot on target and that makes it harder to take for everybody.
"Our work in the final third wasn't good enough. The lads are giving everything for the football club but we need more quality."
