Espanyol 0-0 Atlético Madrid

Joao Miranda
Joao Miranda's dismissal was Atletico's eighth red card of the season

Atletico Madrid centre-back Joao Miranda was sent off as they missed the chance to reclaim third place in La Liga by drawing at Espanyol.

The Brazil international received a red card in first-half injury time for an elbow on home midfielder Abraham.

Diego Simeone's side, who slipped to fourth after Valencia beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 on Friday, still had the better second-half chances.

Raul Garcia and Arda Turan were denied by Espanyol keeper Kiko Casilla.

Atletico's hopes of defending their Spanish title are fading away after three successive draws, and they have won just one of five league matches since beating city rivals Real Madrid 4-0 on 7 February.

Their best first-half opening came with a Fernando Torres header, but Casilla kept the ball out.

Torres was replaced by centre-back Jose Gimenez in a tactical reshuffle after Miranda's deserved red card, and Atletico continued to look the more likely team to score.

Midfielder Garcia went close with 13 minutes left with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area but Casilla reacted well to turn it round the post.

Casilla was sharp again five minutes from the end to stop Turkey international Arda's close-range effort and ensure Espanyol earned their point.
