Wigan Athletic 1-1 Bolton Wanderers

Martyn Waghorn
Martyn Waghorn had not scored a goal for Wigan since 22 September

Martyn Waghorn's 94th-minute overhead kick snatched a point for strugglers Wigan at home to Bolton Wanderers.

Teenager Tom Walker scored the opening goal for Bolton as his deflected shot wrong-footed Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi.

Wanderers were indebted to goalkeeper Ben Amos after the England Under-21 player made fine saves from Marc-Antoine Fortune and Jermaine Pennant.

But Waghorn hit an overhead kick with little time left on the clock as Wigan kept to within six points of safety.

Wigan have seven games left to save themselves from Championship relegation, four of which are against promotion-chasing sides Middlesbrough, Derby, Brentford and Wolves.

Bolton dropped to 17th in the table as they missed out on what would have been their first away win since beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 on 17 January.

James Perch had the first opportunity of the game as his dipping shot rattled the Bolton bar after a quarter of an hour, while Walker, Rochinha and Emile Heskey had chances for the visitors.

But it was Wigan who came closest to breaking the deadlock before the break as on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Amos made a fantastic save from Fortune's point-blank header after the former Celtic and West Bromwich Albion striker was found unmarked by Josh Murphy's cross.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Leon Clarke had an effort chalked off for offside after he blasted in from close range from Jermaine Pennant's header.

Tom Walker, who opened the scoring, was making just his third start for Bolton

Soon after the restart Pennant saw a free-kick from the edge of the box tipped onto the post by Amos before his volley from Gaetan Bong's cross was blocked by Matt Mills.

But it was 19-year-old Walker who broke the deadlock as he scored his first professional goal in just his fourth appearance for the club.

He picked up the ball on the edge of the box and his shot on the turn took a deflection and crept into the bottom corner, leaving Al Habsi with no chance.

Wigan had two great chances to snatch a point in the final minutes as first Sheyi Ojo's deflected shot was well saved by Amos and Clarke had a header which rattled the crossbar.

But just as it seemed the Latics would suffer a third defeat in four games, Waghorn hit a superb acrobatic effort from inside the six-yard box from William Kvist's corner.

Wigan boss Malky Mackay:

"My team were terrific, in terms of the way they played. I was happy with the first half, and I was even happier with the second half.

"We lost a really unlucky goal, and the boys immediately got up, got on with it again and hit their bar and saw their goalkeeper produce two wonderful saves before scoring our goal.

"There's a great fighting spirit at the moment, it's a fresh group of players - some frees, some loans, some stalwarts, some kids - but they're pulling together and we're going toe-to-toe with whoever we play against."

Bolton manager Neil Lennon:

"With our away form and Wigan's home form, a draw was always going to be on the cards.

"While I'm delighted with a point, I'm not so pleased with the performance.

"Wigan fully deserved their point. It was the least they deserved for their effort."
