Hartlepool beat 10-man Mansfield to win for the third game in succession and move within one point of safety.
League Two's bottom side took the lead when Brad Walker converted from the penalty spot after a foul on Nicky Featherstone by Lee Beevers.
The Stags were reduced to 10 men when Junior Brown saw red for a dreadful studs-up challenge on Walker.
The visitors almost snatched a point only for Scott Flinders to brilliantly deny Chris Clements.
Mansfield manager Adam Murray told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"I think for large periods of the game we had them on the back foot and we've ended up killing ourselves.
"You can't concede a penalty after two minutes and then have a man sent off and expect to have a strong hold in the game for 45 minutes.
"We had them on the back foot and didn't take advantage of it. Two minutes into the second half we end up shooting ourselves.
"It's part of the game that you rely on individuals to carry out their duties. It's a tough one but we go again."
