Shrewsbury Town 2-0 Oxford United

Liam Lawrence
Shrewsbury captain Liam Lawrence scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season

League Two high-flyers Shrewsbury Town brushed aside Oxford with two goals from Liam Lawrence, despite Rhys Sharpe's red card with 31 minutes left.

The hosts took an early lead when Oxford captain Jake Wright fouled Cameron Gayle to concede a penalty, converted by Town skipper Lawrence.

Sharpe picked up a second yellow card on the hour mark before the U's nearly equalised with Callum O'Dowda's header.

But Lawrence fired a 20-yard free-kick to give his side back-to-back wins.

Shrewsbury ended a run of just four points out of a possible 15 by winning 4-1 at Morecambe on Tuesday night.

Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"In games like this, you have to just dig in and press on and we've been able to add the second one to make it comfortable in the end.

"It's another one ticked off. You have to show different qualities at this stage of the season to win games.

"The crowd have been exceptionally nervy - and Liam Lawrence has kept everyone calm. We need the crowd working for us, not against us. They have a massive part to play in this."
