Plymouth remain on course for the play-offs with victory at Cheltenham who are rock bottom of League Two.
Reuben Reid opened the scoring with a low finish after a fine run from Carl McHugh.
Plymouth doubled their lead after Reid beat Jack Deaman to make room for a shot and he saw his effort loop up off Matt Taylor and into the net.
Zak Ansah rounded off the scoring with four minutes left, nodding in Anthony O'Connor's cross.
Cheltenham are now two points from safety, while Plymouth occupy the final play-off place with seven games left to play.
Cheltenham Town caretaker manager Russell Milton told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"We've been good for patches and then when we've not been good we've been punished.
"We had a couple of opportunities that didn't go for us - they took theirs, we didn't take ours.
"They ground us down in the end today and we've just got to pick ourselves up and get on with it.
"Of course the players care, we all care. It sickens me to the pit of my stomach where we are."
