Southport 2-1 Torquay United

Paul Smith's late goal gave Southport a narrow victory against 10-man Torquay.

Smith capitalised on some slack Gulls' defending as he pounced to score the winner five minutes from time.

Earlier Scott Kay's 20-yard free-kick put the hosts in front before Luke Young was shown a straight red card for his reaction to a foul by Kay.

Toby Ajala tucked home a second-half equaliser after James McQuilkin's free-kick hit the bar but Smith secured three points for the Sandgrounders.

Southport are now unbeaten in six league games, while Torquay have only won once in seven.
