Greg Bolger scored a brilliant goal from about 45 yards as St Patrick's Athletic beat Derry City 2-0 in the Premier Division game at Richmond Park.
The midfielder launched an amazing shot from the centre circle after spotting keeper Gerard Doherty off his line.
Doherty was injured in trying to get to the ball and had to be replaced by Derry debutant Shaun Patton.
St Pat's substitute Morgan Langley headed in the second goal for the hosts eight minutes from time.
Tuesday's defeat sees Peter Hutton's City slip into the lower half of the table on four points from four games.
Derry won their opening league game in Galway, but since then have lost to Dundalk and St Pat's and drawn at Sligo.
Bolger's remarkable strike lit up what had been a largely uneventful encounter.
The midfielder won the ball in the centre circle and, spotting Doherty out near the edge of the penalty area, launched a terrific shot which had the pace and direction to beat the stranded Derry keeper.
In 2013 Bolger, 26, had won the goal of the season award for a stunning 25-yard screamer in a league game against Sligo Rovers which helped St Pat's win the league title.
And, the man from Wexford will surely be in the running again this year, even though the season is just a few weeks' old.
The goal was the difference between the sides until new signing Langley headed in at the far post after Conan Byrne's free-kick into the danger area in the 82nd minute.
Derry are in league action again on Friday night when they host Drogheda United. There will be commentary on the game on BBC Radio Foyle and the BBC Sport website.
